ICANN

A. What is ICANN? ( www.icann.org )
ICANN is a website that is responsible for the global coordination of the Internet's system of unique identifiers. These include domain names (like .org, .museum and country codes like .UK), as well as the addresses used in a variety of Internet protocols. Computers use these identifiers to reach each other over the Internet. Careful management of these resources is vital to the Internet's operation, so ICANN's global stakeholders meet regularly to develop policies that ensure the Internet's ongoing security and stability.
B. What is the domain name system?
The Domain Name System (DNS) is a distributed internet directory service. DNS is used mostly to translate between domain names and IP addresses, and to control email delivery. Most internet services rely on DNS to work. If DNS fails or is too slow, web sites cannot be located and email delivery stalls.
C. What is ICANN's role?

Test Question

The two methods of connecting to the Internet that i am going to discuss are dial-up and cable. Dial up is where you have a telephone line that connects you to the Internet. Because you are connected over the phone line connection can be somewhat slower. This type of connection is probably best for older people who don't really do a lot of chatting and downloading music and such, better for just sending emails and simple stuff. The disadvantages are that it is slower and you can not receiver phones calls while connected. Advantages are that it is cheaper than the other Internet connections.
Cable on the other hand goes through you TV cable which means you have to have a splitter. This connection is better because it doesn't tie up your phone line, it is faster, and you can stay connected longer without getting kicked off. It cost more than dial-up but i would say it is worth it. This type of connection is probably better for maybe younger people who do a lot of chatting and downloading.

"Free" Internet Service Offers- are they really free?

This article just talks about how many people get misled by the ads for "free" Internet service trial periods. These ads are misleading because they get you to start the Internet service and then they don't let you know when the trial is over and you automatically without knowing get signed up. When your trial is over and you haven't been informed you end up getting charged for it and next thing you know your getting charged for a Internet service you didn't even know you signed up for. This article also tells you some ways to cancel the service before you get misled, and they tell you to contact the Federal Trade Commission if you think you have been misled. There is a phone number you can also call if you have been misled or need some help with something. you can find this article at this site http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/freeispalrt.shtm .

internet use survey

For this assignment we were told to interview five different people about their Internet use. For the interview we asked questions such as do they use the Internet, if so what they do while on the Internet , how long they usually spend on the Internet, and if and how it effects their home life and social life.
I interviewed to people on their late forties male and female, and three people in their late teens, one male and two females. I found that the older adults used the Internet mostly for business such as paying bills emails for work and shopping for vacations tickets. the adults also spend more time doing these things rather than watching TV. The younger adults I interviewed used the Internet mostly for chatting, emailing, games, and shopping. The girls mostly chat and shop and the guys mostly play games and look up sports stuff. These things did not seem to effect their home or social lives.
The results I got are pretty much what I expected. The older adults used the internet for mostly buisness and shopping and the younger adults used it mostly for games chatting and shopping.
